European language modules

You can study the following European languages under the KLS:

  • French
  • Spanish
  • German
  • Italian

There are six units of language study, as follows.

Unit 1 (French, Spanish, German, Italian)

At this level the aim is to provide beginners in the foreign language with language skills to enable them to interact satisfactorily in survival situations and social encounters in the foreign country and to be aware of related aspects of the foreign culture and environment.

Entry requirements: None

Unit 2 (French, Spanish, German, Italian)

At this level the aim is to provide near beginners in the foreign language with language skills to enable them to interact satisfactorily in survival situations and social encounters in the foreign country and to be aware of related aspects of the foreign culture and environment.

Entry requirements: Completion of Unit 1 or equivalent level.

Unit 3 (French, Spanish, German, Italian)

Teaching at this level is aimed at reactivating and building on the student's previous knowledge of the foreign language; to equip students with the necessary linguistic skills to enable them to communicate in a number of familiar work and social situations and respond accordingly. Additionally students will develop an awareness of aspects of the foreign culture and environment.

Entry requirements: Completion of Unit 2, or a GCSE pass, or equivalent.

Unit 4 (French, Spanish, German)

Teaching will aim to reactivate and continue to build on the student's previous knowledge of the foreign language; to equip students with the necessary linguistic skills to enable them to communicate in a number of real life situations and respond accordingly. Students will also develop an awareness of aspects of the foreign culture and environment.

Entry requirements: Completion of Unit 3 or equivalent level.

Unit 5 (French, Spanish, German)

This unit will aim to extend the student's previous knowledge of the foreign language in all skills and to include more complex structures, with an enlarged range of registers. It will also deepen an awareness of aspects of the foreign culture and work environment.

Entry requirements: Completion of Unit 4, or an A level pass, or equivalent.

Unit 6 (French, Spanish, German)

This unit will continue to build and develop the student's previous knowledge of the foreign language in all skills, to continue to develop the use of more complex structures and to consolidate and further extend the student's range of registers. It will also consolidate and deepen the student's awareness of aspects of the foreign language, culture and work environment.

Entry requirements: Completion of Unit 5 or equivalent level of language.
