Non-European language modules

You can study the following non-European languages under the KLS:

  • Japanese
  • Mandarin (Chinese)
  • Arabic

There are three units of language study, as follows.

Unit 1 (Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin)

The aim is to provide beginners with an introduction to basic language skills to enable them to recognise the script, to enable them to interact in survival situations, to recognise short sentences in the language and to begin to understand the different cultural background to social communication.

Entry requirements: None

Unit 2 (Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin)

The aim is to provide near beginners with basic language skills to enable them to read the script, to understand with the help of a dictionary short written information, to understand short announcements and to enable them to interact in survival situations and social encounters and understanding the different cultural background to social communication.

Entry requirements: Completion of Unit 1 or equivalent level.

Unit 3 (Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin)

Teaching at this level is aimed at reactivating and building on the student's previous knowledge of the foreign language; to equip students with the necessary linguistic skills to enable them to communicate in a number of familiar work and social situations and respond accordingly. Additionally students will develop an awareness of aspects of the foreign culture and environment.

Entry requirements: Completion of Unit 2, or a GCSE pass, or equivalent.

Unit 4 (Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin)

Teaching will aim to reactivate and continue to build on the student's previous knowledge of the foreign language; to equip students with the necessary linguistic skills to enable them to communicate in a number of real life situations and respond accordingly. Students will also develop an awareness of aspects of the foreign culture and environment.

Entry requirements: Completion of Unit 3 or equivalent level.
