Creative Writing student profiles

Helen Turnbull Majoring in Creative Writing, Minor in English Literature

pic of I never made it to university first time around. It wasn't a mainstream option back in the day, but I have always had a passion for literature and an inkling that I could string a few words together.

Kingston seemed ideal. It offered the course I was looking for and it was local which is important as I have family commitments with two teenage children.

I am in my second year now and it has been fantastically rewarding so far. The course is challenging and varied and there is plenty of opportunity to try out new forms of writing and to get feedback. The lecturers are all published authors who offer their own unique approach. This has given me the chance to try out their writing styles and processes; I select what works for me, and discard what doesn't. It's a bit like trying on clothes and I sense that my wardrobe is slowly beginning to come together.

I had a few concerns about being a mature student, but these were quickly dispelled. The atmosphere at Kingston is incredibly friendly and tolerant and I have made good friends across all age groups.

I have discovered a passion for scriptwriting and have just started work on an adaptation of a novel for the stage in which the Millennium Theatre has expressed an interest. I would like to carry on my studies and am checking out MA/MFA options with the intention of focussing on playwriting.
