Film, Media and TV people

People pic We have around 350 undergraduate students and a further 51 postgraduates who come from a wide variety of backgrounds both in this country and worldwide. Film at Kingston is a creative collaborative community that thrives on a rich cultural mix and celebrated intellectual diversity.

Our academic staff expertise is wide ranging, with a particular focus on national and international cinemas, including British, French (and the New Wave), German, Spanish & Latin American Cinema. The team includes world experts on film and philosophy, outsider thought and film theory, minimalism, Modernism and its legacies, 3D Cinema, collective film making, experimental & fine art documentary, sound design & sonic portraiture, British film editors... and Batman.

Our practical film making staff expertise includes, collective film making, experimental & fine art documentary, sound design & sonic portraiture, British film editors, neo-realist film making and conventions of genre movie making; archiving subaltern experience in the UK and overseas, and Black British photography and film making.

Prof Ken McMullen is an award-winning film director and artist. His feature films are distributed worldwide, his documentaries broadcast extensively and his art works exhibited in leading contemporary art galleries. During his career McMullen has collaborated with world-leading philosophers as well as scientists at the Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN) in Geneva.

Prof Will Brooker's work primarily studies popular cinema within its cultural context, situating it historically and in relation to surrounding forms such as literature, comic books, video games, television and journalism. He is currently one of a number of top international critics who have been asked to cite their best ten films of all time for a poll held every ten years by Sight and Sound - the magazine of the British Film Institute.

Prof John Mullarkey He is the author of Philosophy and the Moving Image: Refractions of Reality (2010), co-editor of Laruelle and Non-Philosophy (2012), The Bloomsbury Companion to Continental Philosophy (2013), and Bergson and the Art of Immanence: Painting, Photography, Film (2013). He is currently working on a book-film project dealing with the representations of animals in film and philosophy.
