Film, Media and TV academic research interests

Mata Ayoub

My current research involves young people on the Autism Spectrum and their use of language across the curriculum. I use a combination of film making and educational approaches, for example, Picture Exchange Communication and Storyboarding, in an attempt to reduce or remove the barriers to learning in order to increase access to content and subject matter.

Will Brooker

My research explores the relationship between producers, audiences, popular texts and cultural-historical contexts, through case studies including Alice in Wonderland, the Star Wars franchise, Blade Runner and Batman. I am interested in the way that popular icons change over time to suit the cultural concerns of different periods, and the way people interpret the same stories in different ways. I have published nine books and many articles -- in academic journals and magazines and newspapers - and I am the current editor of the internationally-renowned Cinema Journal.

Simon Brown

My main research interests are early and silent cinema, and contemporary American television. In terms of early cinema, focusing mainly on British cinema, I'm interested in the history of the development of the film industry and examining how it grew from a series of inventors in workshops and labs into a complex economic system of interrelated businesses producing, distributing and exhibiting films with a global reach. The main focus has been the work of pioneer filmmaker Cecil Hepworth. My research on American television similarly places the contemporary TV landscape within its economic structures, exploring how channels such as Showtime, FX and HBO use their niche status to attract new and loyal audiences through challenging shows such as Dexter, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos and American Horror Story. I'm also interested more broadly in ideas of TV horror and how the horror genre has developed on TV since the 1970s through things like adaptations of the works of Stephen King, and landmark series like The X-Files and Twin Peaks. Finally I am also interested in all things 3D.

Corin Depper

My current research focuses on the connections between film, poetry, and the visual arts. For several years, I have been interested in the history of experimental and avant-garde cinema, exploring its lineage and influence across other media. This has drawn on an abiding interest in Modernist poetry and poetics, especially the work of Ezra Pound. I also have an ongoing interest in the later philosophy of Martin Heidegger and its potential application to film; to this end I have recently completed a monograph that advances a Heideggerian reading of Jean-Luc Godard's 1963 film Le Mépris.

Abbe Fletcher

I am a member of the Kingston filmmaking group, we are involved in collective filmmaking research projects and collective supervision of PhDs in film making. In terms of research, I am interested in work made by women, particularly that which seeks to challenge established hierarchies and favours collective and inclusive working practices. I am interested in women's labour and challenging the marginalisation of women in and through film. I am interested in the impact of motherhood and the importance of community in filmmaking. I am interested and inspired by the work of the following filmmakers: Rose Lowder, Agnes Varda, Chantal Akerman, Maya Deren, Ida Lupino, Kurt Kren, Stan Brakhage, Len Lye, Chris Marker, Dziga Vertov, Jonas Mekas and Guy Sherwin among many others.

John Mullarkey

My work explores the relationship between of film and philosophy. I welcomes applications from PhD students wishing to work in the areas of Film Theory, Film and Philosophy, Film Practice as Research, Animals and Philosophy, Animals and Representation (especially in film), François Laruelle and Non-Philosophy, Gilles Deleuze, Henri Bergson, Alain Badiou, Michel Henry, Contemporary French Philosophy, and Philosophy Of Diagrams.

Catherine O'Brien

My research has encompassed two main areas: the study of French and German women's war writing published between 1914-18; and explorations into intersections between film and religion. I have a particular interest in Mariology (the study of the Virgin Mary in theology and cult) and have published widely on Marian imagery in popular culture, with a more recent focus on American and European cinema history.

Patrick O'Neill

My key research interests surrounds American cinema and television with a particular emphasis of youth films and their historical, socio-political and aesthetic concerns. I also have an interest in American independent film and its relationship to the mainstream. In addition, the so-called American quality television (The Wire, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, etc) and its position as the new 'cinema' in the US is a topic which is of increasing fascination to me.

Davinia Quinlivan

My research interests lie broadly in Film Theory, especially Feminist Film Theory, Film-Philosophy, Psychoanalysis and Aesthetics. I have specific interests in the role of the body in film (haptics, post-structural theory and phenomenology). I am working on two new projects: one on the healing body and trauma in the contemporary cinema of Egoyan, Malick, Almodovar, von Trier and Denis (among others) and a study of sonic landscapes and the natural world in film (spaces and environments). I am interested in Science Fiction film, Art Cinema and, European Cinema and Female Filmmakers.

Andrea Rinke

My research interests have developed in two strands:
1. German cinema: my latest publication includes a forthcoming chapter on the Oscar winning film "The Lives of Others" for a book devoted to this film.
2. "Getting High on Cinema": the latest publication includes an article entitled 'Liminal bodies in liminal spaces: the depiction of drug addicted youth in the films Christiane F. and Drifter'
