Our philosophy

Our Department is just over a decade old, and is therefore, young, dynamic, and willing to do things differently. The programmes at both undergradue and postgraduate levels are delivered by active researchers whose interests range across issues concerning new media, contemporary identities and the relationship between media and politics, some of whom are also practitioners from the fields of journalism and digital media.

Prominent names in the field, such as the well-known journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed (our Visiting Professor in Media in 2013-14) provide lectures for students in the Department.

The curriculum is enriched by regular guest lectures and workshops with media practitioners and professionals and also a series of research workshops which extend and support students' own practice in research design, methods and presentation.

BA Media and Cultural Studies students are able to concentrate equally on analysing culture and creating their own media products.

Students on media and communication programmes come from a wide variety of academic and social backgrounds, from all over the world.
