"Small group teaching and personal attention"

A message from the Dean of Faculty to future Kingston students

Everyone in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Kingston University is committed to delivering the very best educational experience possible for our students. From September 2012 we will be making changes to our ways of teaching in order to make your time with us even better. For students entering our programmes in 2012 we are developing a dedicated model of small group teaching and personal attention that will help you realise your full potential while you study with us.

Your first year of study will be characterised by a formative experience in which you will gain key knowledge and skills in your chosen subject through participation in personal tutorials and small group teaching, along with lectures, seminars and other forms of innovative teaching as well as an extensive extra-curricular programme of events and talks. In years two and three you will retain the personal contacts made with our staff in your first year as you work towards developing into an independent learner capable of extended, critical work on your own, again working with personal tutors in cutting-edge teaching informed by the staff's own research and publishing. From 2012 we will be offering a tutorial-based education and level of personal attention that is on a par with the very best universities in the UK. In addition, our emphasis on teaching subjects relevant to the world today, and producing graduates able to make a positive contribution to that world, makes the educational experience we offer totally unique.

As Dean of Faculty I have high expectations of all our staff, as we seek to realise our ambitions to have all of our departments recognised as amongst the UK's very best for teaching and research. Equally, I have high expectations of our students and expect them to dedicate themselves to their studies as well as enjoying all the social benefits of attending London's leading new university. The changes we are making to how we teach will ensure that your transformative years at university will enable you to realise your full potential as a student and a human being. Kingston University will take care of your educational needs; in turn we are looking for committed students who will take their place in the world as productive citizens and graduates of our unique educational experience.

I very much hope that you will choose to join us on this journey.
