From 1972 until 2006 I was a Lecturer, Principal Lecturer and Reader at Kingston University. My teaching specialisms have been in the history of political thought, social darwinism, theoretical systems in the social sciences and criminology. My research has primarily been in the areas of 19th & 20th century French social & political thought, and social darwinism & has been supported by grants from the British Academy and the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. Between Spetember 2008 and July 2010 I was Visiting Professor and Director of Research for Politics, International Relations and Human Rights. Since then I have been researching the relationship between sociological theory and the formation of republican political theory and practice during the French Third Republic 1870-1914, and also the political thought of the nineteenth century philosopher Charles Renouvier. I am also working on the impact of Darwinism of several areas of public debate, for example educational theory.

Currently I am supervising four doctoral students. Two are working on the history of ideas in France during the late 18th. and early 19th. centuries and and two are studying various aspects of genocide.
