I am a sociologist with a long-standing interest in domestic economies and forms of consumption. My interest in domestic life stems from an ongoing commitment to readdressing the relative lack of prominence of sociological studies of women’s everyday lives and experiences. This concern culminated in an edited collection Gender and Consumption with Lydia Martens (Keele University) which brought together feminist academics working in the field of domestic consumer economies. My doctoral research echoed this focus on gender and consumption by producing one of the first studies of domestic routines and rituals of gambling. The thesis informed my sole-authored monograph Gender, Class and the Gambling Experience which was shortlisted for the BSA Philip Abrams Memorial Prize in 2009. More recently, I have begun to explore the social and cultural history of catalogues and their changing significance in women’s lives. On-going research includes an Economic and Social Research Council grant of £30,029 for a project exploring gambling and households (RES-000-22-4314). The project commences in February 2011 and will set up a new directive on gambling at Mass Observation Archive which is held at Sussex University. I have recently edited with Nick Hubble (Brunel University) a special section of Sociological Research Online on the theme of 'Mass Observation as Method' and also a special section of Families, Relationships and Societies with Yvette Taylor (LSBU) entitled 'Intimacies, Families and Practices of Consumption'. I am also co-editor of 'Everyday Life and Intimacies of Consumption' to be published in 2015 by Palgrave Macmillan.
