Profile

I am a sociologist interested in nationalism. I have taught Sociology and European Studies at a number of institutions in the UK before arriving at Kingston, and am now Senior Lecturer in Politics. I am the course leader for MSc in Politics and MSc in Nationalism, and teach a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules. I have worked on a few European funded research projects which has been enlightening experiences.

My main research interests are in the field of nationalism and ethnicity. I have worked on the relationship between supranationalism (European integration) and nationalism (Scottish and British nationalism), and the relationship between nationalism as a principle of ordering the world and other forces is of great interest to me. I have recently completed a monograph on nationalism and modernity to apply the theory of multiple modernities to the study of nationalism. Since I am interested in investigating the ways in which a sense of belonging can be expressed, I deal with citizenship as well, in particular the idea and implications of European citizenship. In terms of theory of nationalism, I am now investigating the relationship between nationalism and religion to see if nationalism is best made sense of as a secularlised form of religion. Especially in connection to this, I have started to look into the Japanese case - religion and nationalism in Japan, the idea of nation in the non-Western context, etc.

My professional life revolves around the issue of nationalism. I am a member of the Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism, a body which I ran for two years from 1995-1997, and I serve as a member of its Advisory Council. I am also a member of the editorial team of ASEN's journal, Nations and Nationalism.
