English student profiles

Anthony May research student

pic ofI have been a research student at Kingston since 2008. I initially studied part-time whilst working for the University as an academic skills advisor and seminar tutor, and I chose Kingston because the English department specialises in contemporary fiction. As my project developed, I needed to utilise additional supervision within the Politics department. The University were helpful, and I have been able to pursue an interdisciplinary research degree with the support of two departments.

In 2011, I became a full-time student with the aid of a University bursary. It was particularly pleasing to feel that my project was valued, and that Kingston invested in me and my research has been a particular highlight of my career so far. I have also utilised research funding to present papers at conferences in France and Germany, which I would otherwise have been unable to do.

The opportunity to teach on undergraduate modules has been particularly beneficial, and I have gained invaluable experience over the last four years. I have learned a great deal from my colleagues in the English department, and developed a number of essential skills in the process. There are also many interesting and stimulating research projects at Kingston, and I have learned a lot from my peers. As a result of my experiences, I feel that I can enter the next stage of my career with a great deal of confidence.
