Whether you want to learn a language, learn about language or enhance your English language, academic and communication skills, the Department of Languages and Linguistics at Kingston has a course for you.
Learn about language
Our degree programmes in the Department of Languages and Linguistics give you the opportunity to explore language from a diverse range of perspectives, while developing your own communication skills.
At undergraduate level we offer a range of programmes and you can study English Language and Linguistics alongside subjects including English Literature, Creative Writing, Psychology and Sociology.
These combinations give you the opportunity to work across disciplines and explore your interests. See our course page for a full list of available combinations. You can also develop your language skills by taking a minor or half degree in French or Spanish. We offer specially designed pathways for students who have studied French or Spanish to GCSE level, as well as more advanced A-level pathways.
At postgraduate level, we offer an MA in Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching. Whether you are already an experienced language teacher or just starting out in a new career, this degree will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to improve your professional teaching practice.
Our MA by Research route offers you the opportunity to work closely with one of subject specialists on a project of your own choosing. This is the ideal way to explore your interests under the guidance of a professional researcher, and provides preparation for those who wish to go on to study for a PhD. You can read about the specialist areas of the researchers in the department in our People section.
