Languages and Linguistics study

All our courses, whether they are degree programmes, or not, are taught by qualified teachers who are knowledgeable about their subjects. They research areas such as storytelling narratives, the pragmatic meaning of hashtags in text messaging, the relationships between text and sounds, trauma narratives, language pathologies, the grieving process, second language vocabulary, and language teaching. All of which adds insight and variety to our courses in languages and linguistics. But do not take our word for this. The Key Information Set highlights how much students appreciate how well we teach.

We foster learning in an environment which is intellectually stimulating and supportive. There is always a member of staff to go to for individual advice and help. We make sure that every undergraduate or postgraduate student has a personal tutor from day one until the end of their course. There is a wide range of academic support available during your studies. This includes the English for Academic and Professional Development programme which offers a wide range of courses in writing and speaking skills designed to help you with the linguistic and academic demands of your main course.

Once you set your sights on the world of work, our Employability workshops help you to gain the necessary skills for CV writing and interviewing. The teaching team will ensure that you know what sort of skills and knowledge you have gained and match this up to what employers are looking for. In fact Kingston University has a great reputation for the amount of graduates who start up their own businesses.

The Kingston Language Scheme offers a unique opportunity to learn a wide range of languages alongside your degree.

If you are an international or EU student, and want to prepare for study at university, the Pre-Sessional English Language Courses is excellent preparation in academic and language skills.

The Kingston Language Scheme (KLS) offers free courses in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, Portuguese and Russian, at several levels ranging from complete beginners to advanced. Students are encouraged to take a language for the whole duration of their degrees, therefore progressing up the levels to achieve a high level of linguistic competence by the end of their studies at Kingston. Fluency in a foreign language is one of the best ways to boost your CV.

The programme helps international students and those educated outside the UK to maximise their potential on their degree programmes with courses that develop their academic writing, reading, listening and speaking.

It is for students of all English language levels including advanced students. The courses aim to familiarise students with the UK academic culture and to enhance their ability to communicate confidently in writing and speaking in both academic and professional contexts. The In-sessional programme allows students to meet and network with students from other subject areas who come from all over the world.

A wide range of 'open' courses on particular skills, e.g. essay writing; vocabulary; grammar; communication skills take place in Penrhyn Road. There are also faculty-specific courses on each campus to help students tackle the specific requirements of their subject area e.g. academic writing for postgraduate business students; dissertation writing for Art & Design students etc. The team also offer one-to-one tutorials where students can take their work to discuss writing and language issues with a tutor.

Provides international and EU students an excellent preparation for study at university. The BALEAP accredited course is offered in a number of different lengths during the summer and autumn.
