29 March, 5.00pm-6.00pm Peter Finn - The Globalisation of Rendition and Secret Detention
A central component of the US-led 'war on terror' has been the holding, transfer and interrogation of terror suspects, often outside the bounds of international law. In many senses, we can now speak of a 'globalised system' of rendition and secret detention, with a complex network of co-operation and complicity in relation to capture, detention, transfer and treatment of suspects.
Peter Finn will be speaking about the project he is working on with Dr Sam Raphael, which is designed to bring together the existing data collected by human rights organisations, identify the major features of this network, and analyse how the system has evolved over the past ten years.
Room JG5005, John Galsworthy building, Penrhyn Road campus
24 April, 6.00pm The Survivors Speak Out Network from Freedom from Torture
Freedom from Torture is a human rights organisation that exists to enable survivors of torture and organised violence to engage in a healing process to assert their own human dignity and worth. Their concern for the health and well-being of torture survivors and their families is directed towards providing medical and social care, practical assistance, and psychological and physical therapy. We will be joined by Kolbassia Haoussou, a network member, to hear more about this fascinating organisation.
Room JG3007, John Galsworthy building, Penrhyn Road campus
25 April, 5.00pm-6.30pm Arms Trade Debate
What can we expect from the Arms Trade Treaty? What are the implications of the treaty with regards to the protection of human rights? What substantial difference will the treaty make? And is there such thing as 'responsible' arms trade?
As part of the Kingston University Human Rights Festival a panel of experts will discuss these and other questions. Be invited to join this fascinating debate and share your concerns with the members of the panel.
Room JG0002, John Galsworthy building, Penrhyn Road campus
26 April - CANCELLED Humanitarian Affairs Case Competition
Test your ability to analyse a humanitarian crisis and present it in front of a panel of experts from the media, a UN agency, and a Human Rights organisation. Similar to case studies you will have three hours to prepare a twenty minute presentation addressing the key issues to an ongoing crisis. To participate you have to attend the information session on Thursday 22 March at 4pm in Room JG5014. If you are unavailable please visit www.starku.org and contact us for more information.
